Improving the Website Health of Broadlawns Medical Center

Broadlawns Medical Center is an outstanding public hospital serving residents in the Des Moines area. Broadlawns recently renovated, improving their facilities and enabling better patient comfort and care. Their team came to Blue Compass looking for a new healthcare website design to represent the improvements made across the organization and to better serve their patients. Our goal was to design an outstanding medical website to meet the various needs of their diverse audiences, including patients, family members, staff and potential industry talent. We met these unique priorities and challenges by creating a modern, user-friendly website that revived Broadlawns’ online presence and reflects their status as a reputable provider of high-quality medical care.

Curing An Outdated Homepage With Modern Design

A website’s homepage is a user’s first impression of the site, and we wanted to give Broadlawns Medical Center a cool, custom homepage design that would impress site visitors and help them accomplish their goals. The Broadlawns homepage features a tiled grid of photos that highlight patients, practitioners and facilities, which shows their care services and establishes a connection with the user. In the content management system (CMS) is a module their team can update in real time, delivering essential information and actionable next steps with quick links to doctor profiles and virtual care, along with wait times for urgent care clinics.

Web Design & Development

Revamping the navigation and content architecture was a priority for our web design and development team as we began working on the Broadlawns site. We wanted all users to be able to find what they’re looking for quickly, whether they are patients looking for parking information or medical students looking for internship details. Additionally, Broadlawns serves patients from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds — many of their patients’ primary language is not English. We ensured the website is easy to navigate with clear, simple verbiage throughout, especially on navigation menus and CTA buttons.

ADA Compliance

All Blue Compass websites follow ADA compliance standards, which are guidelines to ensure users with disabilities are able to easily navigate through a website and find the information they need. For a medical website design, accessibility is especially critical. The fonts, colors and contrast of the design make the site easy to read for individuals with vision impairments and for assistive devices like screen readers. The site is also mobile-friendly and easy to navigate on all screen sizes. Our user-friendly CMS provides the Broadlawns team with the ability to maintain ADA compliance easily as they edit and add content.

Event System

Broadlawns needed a unique event system in order to organize offerings such as group therapy sessions, cancer screening events, support groups and various classes. We modified our standard event system in order to meet their complex needs. Their event system supports one-time events as well as recurring classes, allowing users to find all the information they need and easily register online. The Broadlawns team can easily add and edit events at any time. Each event may include options such as event-size limit, credit card payment options, photos galleries, videos, and more.

Content Management System

The project includes Slate, a user-friendly content management system (CMS). The custom-built CMS allows the client to easily make changes to the website and add new content. With continuous growth and expansion, the Broadlawns team can continually expand the website to match the organization. Slate provides all the necessary to make the website helpful and effective.

The Blue Compass Standard Of Care

Our team went the extra mile when creating Broadlawns Medical Center’s healthcare website design. Our team worked quickly to launch the site in March 2020, ensuring the community would be able to access important public health information at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
